Planning a wedding in Italy sounds incredibly romantic, and in many ways, it is. There are villas tucked into hillsides, long tables under fairy lights, sunset aperitivos, handmade pasta, beautiful old towns, and that feeling Italy has of making everything seem a little more cinematic.
But once the dreaming turns into actual planning, most couples quickly realise there is a lot more to think about than they expected.
Trust me, you'll never regret getting married in Italy. You'll only regret skipping the right first steps.
Choosing a wedding in Italy is not just choosing a pretty venue. It means understanding regions, budgets, guest travel, ceremony options, supplier communication, timelines, accommodation, transport, and whether you need extra planning support along the way.
That is usually where the overwhelm begins.
Most couples do not struggle because they are disorganised. They struggle because they are trying to make big decisions before they understand the order those decisions should happen in. They might be saving venues before knowing what kind of ceremony they want, comparing regions before understanding guest logistics, or enquiring with suppliers before having a realistic budget in place.
And honestly, that is very easy to do.

Why inspiration is not always the best starting point
When you first begin planning, inspiration feels helpful. You save villas, browse wedding galleries, look at photographers, pin tablescapes, and start imagining the day in your head.
There is nothing wrong with that. Inspiration is part of the fun.
The problem is when inspiration becomes the planning strategy.
A venue might look perfect online, but that does not automatically mean it works for your guest list, budget, travel plans, ceremony type, or overall wedding experience. A region might look dreamy, but it might not suit the season you are considering. A supplier might be beautiful, but may not be practical for where your wedding is actually taking place.
This is why the first stage of planning needs to be less about collecting ideas and more about understanding what matters first.
Before you book anything, there are a few bigger questions worth answering properly.
Where in Italy actually suits you?
Italy is not one single wedding destination. A wedding in Tuscany will feel very different from a wedding in Sicily, Lake Como, Puglia, Venice, or the Amalfi Coast.
Each region has its own atmosphere, price point, travel considerations, weather patterns, venue styles, and guest experience. Some regions are better suited to relaxed countryside celebrations. Others suit luxury lakeside weddings, coastal weekends, city weddings, or more rustic, authentic celebrations.
The right region is not always the most famous one. It is the one that suits your vision, your budget, your guests, and the kind of experience you want to create.
This is one of the first decisions worth slowing down for, because it affects almost everything else that follows.

What kind of ceremony do you want?
Ceremony type is another decision couples often leave too late.
In Italy, you generally need to understand whether you want a legal ceremony, symbolic ceremony, religious ceremony, or civil ceremony. Each option has different requirements, and those requirements can influence your venue choices, paperwork, timeline, and planning process.
Many international couples choose a symbolic ceremony because it gives them more flexibility and avoids a lot of the legal administration overseas. Others feel strongly about having the legal ceremony in Italy and are happy to work through the extra paperwork.
Understanding your ceremony type before falling in love with a venue can save you a lot of confusion later.
There is no wrong choice, but there is a right order.
What can you realistically spend?
Budget is where the dream needs a gentle reality check.
A venue fee is not the same as a wedding budget. This is one of the biggest traps couples fall into when planning from abroad.
You might find a venue that seems affordable at first glance, but once you add catering, drinks, flowers, photography, music, transport, accommodation, styling, beauty, celebrant, stationery, welcome events, and guest logistics, the real cost can look very different.
A realistic budget does not mean stripping away the magic. It means knowing where your money is going so you can make better choices from the beginning.
It also helps you avoid falling in love with options that were never going to work financially. Very romantic in theory. Slightly chaotic in practice.
How will your guests actually get there?
Guest logistics are one of the least glamorous parts of destination wedding planning, but they matter so much.
Your guests are not just driving across town. They may be flying internationally, taking trains, hiring cars, organising transfers, booking accommodation, and using annual leave to be there.
Before choosing a location, it is worth thinking about how easy the destination is to reach. Is there an airport nearby? Will guests need to hire cars? Is there enough accommodation close to the venue? Are there older guests who may struggle with stairs, hills, heat, or long transfers?
A beautiful wedding is not just about how it looks. It is also about how it feels for the people who are there.
When guest logistics are considered early, the whole experience becomes smoother, calmer, and more enjoyable.
Do you need a planner, or not yet?
This is one of the most common questions couples ask when they start planning a wedding in Italy.
The answer is not the same for everyone.
Some couples absolutely need a planner, especially if they are planning a large wedding, a multi day event, a luxury design heavy celebration, or a wedding in a more logistically complex location.
